Course Content

DAS, DTS, and DSS are the three distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS) technologies that have drawn much attention in recent years. Sensing fibers can be deployed in places that are otherwise inaccessible due to small size, high endurance to harsh environments, and long sensing range, as well as limited cost. This workshop focuses on sharing the recent development of the hardware, software, and interpretation methods of DFOS applications in all fields of applied geophysics.

Session 3:
Dark Fiber and Near-Surface Applications
  • Monitoring tailings dams with seismic interferometry using DAS: Tjaart de Wit, Colorado School of Mines
  • Accurate geolocalization of large-scale DAS through GPS-tracked moving vehicles: Ettore Biondi, Caltech
  • Basin-to-Field Scale Structural Imaging Using DAS and Natural Seismicity for Geothermal Applications: Jonathan Ajo-Franklin, Rice
  • Dispersion curve inversion and full waveform inversion of the surface wave data from a trench-deployed fiberoptic survey: Luping Qu, University of Calgary
  • Panel Discussion
Session 4:
Instrumentation and Deployment
  • The Limits of DAS: Robert J. Mellors, UCSD
  • Development of Joint Acoustic and Magnetic Sensing in a Single Fiber: Zach Hileman; Virginia Tech
  • Atlantis subsea DAS installation and VSP acquisition: Jean-Paul van Gestel, BP
  • Simultaneous Monitoring Fiber Optic DAS and Distributed Strain Sensing Signals with High Resolution during Hydraulic Fracturing and Production Operations: Artur Guzik, Neubrex
  • Panel Discussion
