High-resolution subsurface images underpin critical and expensive investment decisions in hydrocarbon and low carbon energy businesses. Despite cumulative advances in data acquisition and imaging algorithms, reservoir images seem to be hit by a ‘bandwidth barrier’ in most surface surveys. We examine the state-of-the-art practices in driving the image resolution, and debate what it would take to push the resolvable frequency by the next octave.
