Short Course

SC-05: Planning and Operating a Land 3D Seismic Survey

Sponsored By the (SEG) Society of Exploration Geophysists

Sunday, 25 August
8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Monday, 26 August
8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

George R. Brown Convention Center

This two-day course will expose attendees to the practical aspects of 3D survey design and then teach the basics of planning and designing a survey. The course will discuss different survey techniques, designs, and geophysical limitations, along with field layouts and operational issues. Modern acquisition equipment and recording techniques will be shown along with future directions and current state of the art for the industry.

The course is designed to be followed by anyone with a general understanding of at least the concepts of 2D acquisition. Geophysical terminology for 3D acquisition will be explained at the beginning of the course.
From the first day of training, attendees will be able to:
· Differentiate the current trends in industry toward 3D.
· Recognize the basic nomenclature of 3D survey designs.
· Distinguish the bin size rules and target depth rules.
· Determine Xmin and Xmax limits for a survey.
· Determine aprons, edge management, and image areas.
· Identify narrow vs. wide azimuth surveys.
· Appraise basic 3D layouts and some of the practical designs.

From the second day of training, attendees will be able to:
· Appraise advanced 3D layouts and evaluate their advantages.
· Discuss modern acquisition equipment, techniques, and hardware.
· Explain modern thinking on array design and application.
· Recognize practical field issues and operations.
· Determine shooting strategies, zippers, along with offsets and skidding.
· Recognize processing and interpretation impacts on survey designs.
· Identify the utility of orthomaps, GIS data, and operational issues.
· Explain converted wave 3D design and operations.
· Recognize the current state of the art in land 3D seismic surveys and equipment.
