Dandina N. Rao is Distinguished Professor in the Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA. He has been involved in rock-fluids interactions and enhanced oil recovery research and field project implementations for nearly 4 decades. He previously worked as Principal Petroleum Engineer with TRW/BDM Petroleum Technologies (Formerly NIPER) in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; as Staff Research Engineer with Petroleum Recovery Institute in Calgary; and as Research Engineer with Shell Canada. In addition to developing the Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) Process for enhanced oil recovery, Dr. Rao has invented the HydroFlame process for steam and flue gas generation for heavy oil and conventional oil recovery, the dual-drop dual-crystal technique for confident reservoir wettability characterization, and the vanishing interface technique (VIT) for quick and cost-effective gas-oil miscibility determination. He considers the implementation of some of these ideas by producing companies in the oil fields as the most gratifying accomplishment, next only to the successful professional careers of many of his graduate students. Dr. Rao holds a B.Tech with Distinction from India, a M.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada) and a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary (Canada). He holds several patents in the US, Canada and other countries in addition to publishing over 130 technical papers. In addition to being a member of the Petroleum Society (Canada), SPE, Pi Epsilon Tau, and Sigma Xi, he has served as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology for over 7 years, as Technical Editor of SPE Journal for 5 years, and as Editor-in-Chief of Petroleum Science and Technology Journal for 3 years. Dr. Rao was recently recognized by the Louisiana State University with the Rainmaker Award given to faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and creative scholarship. In January 2019 he was elected a Senior Member of US National Academy of Inventors.
