Dr. Qifei Niu is currently an assistant professor in Geophysics and Hydrology at the Geosciences Department of Boise State University. Before joining Boise State, he was a postdoc at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Kansas and obtained his PhD in civil engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2014. His recent work has been focused on critical zone hydrology and geophysics. In petrophysics, he has been studying the electrical and hydrologic properties of regolith/soil developed from granite bedrock. In hydrogeophysics, his work explores the integration of geophysical results and hydrologic modeling. He was awarded the NSF CAREER project in 2024 to study how precipitation is partitioned at the watershed scale using a combined method of hydrologic modeling and geophysical testing. His teaching at Boise State covers the topics of applied geophysics, geophysical fundamentals, and field studies, and he focuses on providing an equitable opportunity for geoscience students with diverse backgrounds in field learning environments.
