Syed Talha Tirmizi is studying MS Petroleum Engineering (Completion in May 2023) at Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, USA, supervised by Prof. Jon E. Olson, Department Chair UTPGE. He is doing research internship during summer 2022 at the Bureau of Economic Geology, UT Austin, where his research involves machine learning and big data analytics in the area of geothermal energy, supervised by Dr. Kenneth W. Wisian, Associate Director of Environmental Division (BEG). Syed Talha has previously worked in 4 well-reputed organizations including Fuel Research Center, Pakistan Petroleum Limited, MAL Pakistan Ltd. (ExxonMobil) and Switch Energy Alliance (USA).
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, he completed his matriculation as the gold medalist at Saint Patrick’s High School (Convent) and gained his Bachelor’s in Petroleum Engineering with distinction at NED University of Engineering and Technology which is the country’s flagship engineering institution. Having strong interest in research, he has published 10 research papers in renowned international journals and have been awarded “Best Young Researcher Award” at the International Conference held in Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, Italy. He also serves as reviewer to five international journals including Transaction in GIS (Wiley), Earth Sciences Research Journal and DYNA (National University of Columbia). His research interests lie in the area of hydraulic fracturing, geothermal energy, machine learning, fluid and heat flow modelling, geographic information systems and computer vision.
He is very passionate to raise youth’s energy literacy, therefore, served as Founder and President in Student Energy NEDUET, Secretary in UT SPWLA (UT Austin), Director in SPE NED, Editor in SPE Petrospective and co-organizer of International Switch Energy Case Competitions. He has organized 15+ international and national events to help youth delve into the energy challenges and educate them to the current developments in the energy industry. One of his key initiatives include “International Virtual Event for Sustainable Energy Future” in which he spearheaded with 14 universities from 10 countries belonging to five continents which was viewed by 5000+ people worldwide. He is also one of the organizers of the International Switch Energy Case Competition in which over 1000 students annually participate to compete for the total case prize pool of $25,000 USD from 37 countries from all inhabited continents, and energy professionals serve as mentor and judges. The Case Competition is focused on helping students to create innovative solutions for the energy poverty which is one of the most pressing issues of this century.
