Decades of the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico: How Innovation and Performance Continue to Unlock New Resources
Exploration for oil and gas in the offshore Gulf of Mexico started in the 1930s and continues to this day, making the Gulf of Mexico one of the longest lived, most prolific hydrocarbon basins on the planet. Through the years, the Gulf of Mexico has continued to provide a plethora of new opportunities that have been unlocked through breakthroughs in seismic technology, drilling capability, and offshore engineering that exemplify the Exploration mindset coupled with a focus on delivery and performance. With continuing advancements, the Gulf of Mexico is well set up to continue to deliver additional opportunities after nearly a century of Exploration, making it truly one of the global “Super Basins”.
The Michel T. Halbouty lecture series – funded by the AAPG Foundation – is an ongoing special event. Lecture topics are designed to focus either on wildcat exploration in any part of the world where major discoveries might contribute significantly to petroleum reserves, or space exploration where astrogeological knowledge would further mankind’s ability to develop resources on Earth and in the solar system.
