John W. Lane Jr.
John W. Lane, Jr. has been a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) since 1989. John received undergraduate and graduate degrees in geology and geophysics from the University of Connecticut and an Engineering Science Doctorate from Columbia University, NY. His research has focused on the development of surface and borehole geophysical methods for aquifer characterization, geophysical assessment of hydrologic processes, and the application of geophysical methods for water resource and groundwater contamination studies. John was Chief of the USGS Hydrogeophysics Branch from 2001-2021, providing leadership, training, and technical support to USGS hydrologists and cooperators on the application of geophysical methods for water resource investigations. He has developed and supervised domestic and international training courses on the use of geophysics for groundwater exploration and water-resource assessments, and to address geotechnical and environmental engineering problems. Dr. Lane joined the Office of International Programs as the Senior Science Advisor for the International Water Program in 2021.
