Laurie Whitesell
In addition to being the Lead Analyst for Business Development in Eurasia and Europe for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Laurie Whitesell also is the Program Manager for the Near-Surface Geophysics Technical Section and the Mining and Mineral Exploration Committee.
Laurie has a BSc in Geology from the University of Arkansas, an MSc in Geology with a focus on hydrologic problems from the University of Tulsa, and is currently a part-time PhD candidate at Oklahoma State University.
While working as an intern for the New Jersey Geological and Water Survey (NJGWS), Laurie discovered enthusiasm for shallow marine geophysics. After graduate school, Laurie continued to work as a geologist with the NJGWS in the marine geophysics group focusing on shallow marine geophysics and beach nourishment. The group conducted numerous seismic reflection surveys, analyzed hundreds of cores, interpreted thousands of nautical miles of seismic data, and correlated offshore to onshore stratigraphy. Additionally, geophysical support was provided for other programs within the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection utilizing other geophysical methods.
After graduate school, Laurie also worked with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Ground Water Pollution Assessment Bureau on groundwater remediation projects. The state of New Jersey is unique in that although small, it has diverse geological provinces with varied aquifer challenges, and a broad spectrum of contaminants present that required a wide variety of remedial strategies to bring sites into compliance. It was the perfect place to learn a lot quickly.
Throughout her work with SEG, Laurie has combined her academic, government, and industry knowledge to develop, grow, and promote the numerous projects for which she is responsible. While conveying the importance of diversity across a global perspective, the successful execution of her multitude of projects has required a sound geoscience background, effective project management, and strong communication skills.
Laurie has served as an AWG Board South-Central delegate from 2020-2022 and is currently a member of the University of Arkansas Geoscience Department External Advisory Board.
